Chance the Rapper’s Coloring Book Album

Chance the Rapper is always trying to break new rules, and his latest project feels like a leap of faith. The Chicago-based rapper took a huge risk on Coloring Book by seamlessly combining hip-hop with centuries-old gospel traditions. The result is a powerful and moving album that evokes both joy and pain, and is unlike anything else in the hip-hop genre.

Following 2015’s Surf, his third mixtape with the Social Experiment crew, Chance decided to take a different approach on Coloring Book. After a visit to the Chicago Recording Company (CRC), where he met producer Nico Segal and his team, Chance aimed to push his spiritual aspirations further than ever before. His daughter Kensli’s birth earlier in the year reignited his relationship with the church, and the manifestations he laced throughout his rhymes felt much more obtainable.

The end result is an all-around gorgeous album, drenched in horns, pianos, and above all voices. The Chicago Children’s Choir appears on “All We Got,” and choral flourishes are woven into nearly every track. Chance’s rapping may have shifted from the childish gimmicks of Acid Rap to a more mature and reflective style on this project, but his passion still comes through in spades.

Chance’s fellow MCs will surely covet this spirited musical sermon, which effortlessly combines a gospel choir with the block-party-ready summer jams that made him famous. It’s a stunningly varied release that elevates Chance from viable to visionary.
