Color Book The Regrettes lyrics
Eighteen-year-old Los Angeles foursome The Regrettes write songs that feel like they were ripped from your high school diary. It’s no wonder, then, that the band’s sophomore record, How Do You Love?, is a fun, vibrant rollercoaster ride. Its 15 tracks, all written by frontwoman Lydia Night, detail the rise and fall of a relationship, from that first rush of butterflies to the destructive break-up.
The album’s opener, “Coloring Book,” captures the carefree intimacy that often accompanies young love. Its imagery—of a walk on the beach revealing each other’s true colors, and of sunlight “coloring in the pages” of a coloring book—emphasize the open possibilities of new relationships, unencumbered by societal expectations or facades.
At the end of the song, however, the singer implores their partner to stay for one last night—perhaps in a final attempt to restore the magic of their relationship. Night’s plea rings with sincerity, indicating that they depend on their partner for emotional support, and that without them, everything feels like a perilous façade.
This track is an example of the angst that permeates the entire record—the frantic drums, the piercing guitars, and the passionate vocal delivery that’s all hallmarks of The Regrettes’ unique sound. It’s a song about a breakup and the confusion that comes from it, but it’s also a beautiful depiction of youthful love, full of excitement and promise. For this reason, it’s one of the best on the album.
