In coloring books, illustrations are provided for the reader to color in. Some books are designed specifically for children, while others are intended for adults. Color books often feature highly detailed and imaginative designs, and many have a story to tell. They may also be educational, for example by teaching children about geography or history. Some coloring books are printed on special paper that allows the user to remove and frame their work for later display.

The McLoughlin Brothers are credited with creating the first coloring book in the 1880s. Since then, coloring books have been popular in the United States and internationally. Many educational publishers have used them to motivate learning in a non-verbal medium, and some have focused on teaching art skills that are not easily acquired through other methods.

There are many different types of coloring books, ranging from easy to difficult and artistic. Some of these include zentangle designs, animal and nature images, and geometric patterns. More advanced coloring books often focus on specific subjects such as science, math, or art.

Some coloring books are marketed as a form of self-care and stress relief. This is often referred to as mindfulness coloring. These books are designed to help the user relax and focus on the present moment by focusing on the details of the image and by letting their thoughts go.
